The University of Texas swimming and diving team recently returned home after winning the national championship only to be disappointed by the lack of rioting by their student body. Senior captain Tony Growt was eagerly awaiting the celebration that never came. "After Maryland and Minnesota we just figured that our victory would mean a riot on campus but when we got back everything was normal. We got congratulations and pats on the back but nothing of what we were expecting. The craziest thing we heard that happened was a that one of the swimmers brother set off a few bottle rockets from his deck." Junior diver Paul Jacobson added to his disappointment, "I am upset with our student body, you think they would have more spirit, I mean come on it was the national championship, swimming and diving is a competitive sport."

University officials said they were prepared for the worst if riots broke out, the police were on full alert. A representative of the university said "we had stores close early, more police on the streets and riot gear at the ready, we don't want a repeat of what has been happening around the nation, its sad that sports has come to this, we really didn't want to win, were more concerned about the safety of our students." When the students were asked about the lack of response, the most common answer given was "we have a swimming and diving team?"

The swimming and diving team although disappointed, relished their victory and was looking forward to next year. Head diving coach Ted Williams said "my boys deserve a riot, they worked just as hard as basketball and hockey players, its unfair that the student body doesn't appreciate their efforts as much. It was a good season and hopefully when we win next year, things will change." As the team was left wondering why, Freshman Jerry Wiley voiced the only optimistic view "maybe next year, there's always next year."
