 | Monday, a blind woman was badly injured after her seeing-eye dog apparently led her into traffic and then ran away. Kayla Harper, a 34 year old telephone operator, has been blind since she was 8 after a tragic staring contest with her brother as to who could look directly at the sun the longest. Her dog, Klondike, has been with her for ten years and just recently has been seen pulling pranks on her master. Witnesses report such events as the dog leading her into walls, walking her in circles till she falls down and guiding her into the men's restroom. In the past week Klondike has been involved in 6 injury reports involving 2 bikers, 2 skateboarders, and 1 rollerblader. In every instance Ms. Harper suffered minor injuries. She claims that "Klondike is the sweetest dog, I know he's capable of doing his job, he just needs to be refreshed on how to do it." Klondike was taken back to his training school where he passed with flying colors. Trainer, Alex Newman, said Klondike was perfect and knew what to do however couldn't be put back into service for one reason. "Klondike is the most intelligent dog I've ever trained and when he ran through the drills with me he was perfect. However, when I switched myself for one of our blind trainers, Brian Friedman, Klondike led Brian into every obstacle and he ended up with a badly sprained wrist. Every time Brian fell, Klondike watched him, wagged his tail and seemed to be laughing. I think Klondike has developed a sense of humor. I have never seen anything like it but was positive when I noticed Ms. Harper's shoes covered in fecal matter." Alex, despite Ms. Harper's insistence that she wanted to keep Klondike, wouldn't allow it and is going to put him up for adoption. Ms. Harper is currently on crutches from a compound fracture to her left leg. She has a new dog and is looking forward to starting a new relationship. "I'm going to miss Klondike but its probably better this way, I'd rather sit on benches than run into them. I have no bad feelings towards him, I'd probably do the same thing in his shoes." | |
